10 Oct 08: Support for model optimisation
Graham Mann and Steven Pickering have been successful with a proposal to the Hector National Supercomputer Service for development of GLOMAP. Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) support for HECToR is provided by the Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG) Ltd. The CSE Service exists to help the user community to make the best use of the HECToR machine by providing training, web-based resources, and assistance with porting, optimisation and tuning of software.
NAG will second a member of staff to the GLOMAP group for a period of 6 months. The work focuses on two issues:
1. Examine performance of MPI-GLOMAP and MPI-TOMCAT by timing, profiling and flowtracing the code at moderate resolution on scalar and vector HECToR platforms with different compilers.
2. Identify and test potential optimizations and algorithmic improvements for the core GLOMAP routines to maximize code efficiency on HECToR for global simulations of moderate resolution. Reduce input/output and communication overheads associated with multi-processor experiments for use on both the scalar and vector HECToR components.
Work starts in October 2008.
