Quaternary QUEST

Regulation of atmospheric carbon dioxide on glacial-interglacial timescales

Research Overview

Quaternary QUEST has strong links with other projects, both within and outside QUEST, including QUEST-Deglaciation, QUEST-DESIRE, FAMOUS and GENIEfy.

To achieve our goal of better understanding the processes which control CO2 concentrations on glacial-interglacial timescales we rely on collaborative efforts with these and other projects to develop suitable biogeochemical and physical components in two cutting-edge Earth-system models (GENIE and FAMOUS); and to synthesise global palaeodatasets to validate these models.

The planned and ongoing work in Quaternary QUEST is divided into a series of work packages, which are organised according to key groups of proxies and/or Earth system processes.

1: Synthesizing long time-series data from marine- terrestrial- and ice-cores

2: Ocean carbon isotopes, Cd/Ca, Pa/Th; and data-model integration

3: Marine biology and testing biogeochemical CO2 mechanisms

4: Ocean physics and testing Southern Ocean CO2 mechanisms

5: Ocean inorganic carbon, sediments and carbonate compensation

6: Weathering, atmospheric transport, and sediment cycling

7: Coupling to the global climate system
